How do you currently travel on the A56?

• On foot

• By car

• Bike

• Other

If you selected 'Other', please specify

Visitors to Turn Moss and members of the committee travel by foot, bike, car, bus and tram.

Would you cycle on the A56 if there was a protected space for cycling?

Unsure

Why do you say this? Please state

Agree with the original intention to provide a safer cycling and walking environment on Edge Lane but disagree with the later decisions to remove sections. A better option could be to retain a single lane of motor traffic between the junctions and adjust the traffic light timings or layouts to ensure they operate effectively. Also please note that when the cones were present there was less high-speed driving, which made it safer for everyone and easier for anyone needing to cross the road. Even with this benefit the marked crossing on the bend between Longford Park and Turn Moss should be upgraded anyway - it was the most requested and supported safe streets suggestion so we hope works can be progressed as soon as possible.

Are you concerned about air quality on the A56?

Yes, I am extremely concerned

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent protected CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

This would be helpful - providing safe alternatives to car transport is the only way to tackle congestion, pollution and parking problems.

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if the current temporary cycle/mobility lanes on the A56 were REMOVED?

Abandoning efforts to improve our environment and people's health would be a disappointing outcome - Trafford should be moving towards a less motorised and less polluted future.

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent SHARED BUS AND CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

Unsure - a shared bus/cycle lane could cause lots of backlash without providing much benefit. The consultation images and people's feedback and responses suggest it would not be considered attractive or feel safe, especially for children or anyone starting or returning to cycling.

Do you have any further comments about the options for the A56 that you would like to share?

While our primary interest is in safe routes and a better crossing on Edge Lane, the A56 also needs improvements as it is the borough's primary route and a key link to Edge Lane. Off-road routes like the canal are welcome but they aren't comfortable in the dark or if poorly maintained, or when they are busy especially where the surface is narrow.

Bearing this in mind, to what extent do you agree or disagree with this approach?

If you selected 'Unsure', please state your reasons

How many people choose to cycle will depend on how safe it looks and feels, so please ensure any provision is continuous and high quality.

Why or why not?

Because the A56 and Edge Lane both experience high levels of pollution, usually due to high levels of motor traffic causing congestion. People need healthier transport options, including anyone considering walking or cycling along Edge Lane.

Could you please give us your thoughts on providing a cycle/bus facility along the A56 (or alternative routes) towards Altrincham in the future?

This is a good idea - everybody should have access to healthier transport options.

Would you cycle on the A56 if there was a protected space for cycling?

No

Why do you say this? Please state

I completely agree with the removal on the "to Chorlton" carriageway because the traffic turning right off the A56 onto Edge Lane was blocking the junction at the start of the green light for drivers on the A56 Southbound. The problem with a lot of these temporary measures is that the traffic light sequences have not been (sufficiently) amended to accommodate the changes. I am surprised that the temporary lane has not been removed on the "Into Stretford" side, since there is a cycle lane there already (shared pavement).

Are you concerned about air quality on the A56?

Yes, I am slightly concerned

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent protected CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

If it meant losing a lane, it would make traffic back up a lot more and make driving more stressful. It would be a nightmare on United match days (at the moment, the cones are removed temporarily, but this wouldn't be possible will a permanent lane). I still wouldn't feel safe to cycle because I would (presumably) need to turn right at some point and I would never want to cross lanes of traffic to do so. Even with dedicated lanes, I think cycling on UK roads is just too dangerous.

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if the current temporary cycle/mobility lanes on the A56 were REMOVED?

It would make driving less stressful (the current lanes are probably much worse than a permanent solution would be because the lane markings and signage do not currently match with the road usage). It would also make it much easier to turn right onto the A56 from Thomas Street (Gorse Hill). The current single lane makes it very difficult to do so at present.

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent SHARED BUS AND CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

Same as above, but possibly slightly better as the bus lane could potentially be suspended on match days to help keep the traffic moving. The current bus routes don't really use a huge amount of the A56.

Do you have any further comments about the options for the A56 that you would like to share?

If you want to turn the A56 into a safe haven for local bus and cycle journeys, then the motorway traffic would need to be diverted elsewhere (e.g. via Trafford Park). But that would obviously be unpopular with the users of those roads.

Bearing this in mind, to what extent do you agree or disagree with this approach?

Why or why not?

There is a high volume of traffic on the A56.

Could you please give us your thoughts on providing a cycle/bus facility along the A56 (or alternative routes) towards Altrincham in the future?

I wonder why these things were not considered when the A56 was widened a few years ago. I think that most people driving on the A56 southbound through Stretford are actually heading for the M60. Those users will never be persuaded to cycle or take the bus because their journey is not sufficiently local to do so.

Would you cycle on the A56 if there was a protected space for cycling?

Yes

Why do you say this? Please state

We have very little protect cycle space. Paris introduced cycle lanes in 2020 and cycling increased by 60%! We need more cycle lanes. More road space for cars only leads to more traffic

Are you concerned about air quality on the A56?

Yes, I am extremely concerned

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent protected CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

My older daughter could cycle to school

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if the current temporary cycle/mobility lanes on the A56 were REMOVED?

Less bike use, more car use

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent SHARED BUS AND CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

I would feel slightly safer cycling

Do you have any further comments about the options for the A56 that you would like to share?

We need save cycle lanes!

Bearing this in mind, to what extent do you agree or disagree with this approach?

1

Why or why not?

WHO just lowered save limits of air pollution because there is conclusive evidence of hatm

Could you please give us your thoughts on providing a cycle/bus facility along the A56 (or alternative routes) towards Altrincham in the future?

That would be great

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if a permanent protected CYCLE/MOBILITY LANE was introduced on the A56?

Would increase confidence using this busy road fro cycling

What would be the impact on you, your family or your business if the current temporary cycle/mobility lanes on the A56 were REMOVED?

Would make A56 a no go area for cycling

Do you have any further comments about the options for the A56 that you would like to share?

We have to change the way we travel and cut down car journeys. I have seen a number of work colleagues take up cycling following my example. If the roads are safer more people would cycle to benefit of everyone and the planet.

Could you please give us your thoughts on providing a cycle/bus facility along the A56 (or alternative routes) towards Altrincham in the future?

Yes I think cycling and buses can work well together but bus drivers need additional training on cycle awareness
